The key to a carefree holiday: awareness and precautions on the waterfront

A summer holiday can easily turn into a nightmare if you don't follow the most basic safety rules. It's important never to jump into the water with a hot body, and if you can't swim, don't go into deep water. These simple yet life-saving rules are a reminder every year that water is not a toy.

In case of trouble at Lake Balaton, you can call the free water emergency number 1817, which connects directly to the Balaton Water Police Station. The emergency number 112 can also be used, in which case the call centre will forward the request to the water police.

The water police officers have an excellent knowledge of all parts of Lake Balaton and can pinpoint the exact location of those in distress. They also monitor the movements of the vessels on duty so they can alert the nearest unit.

Water Rescue Service of Hungary - the civilian lifeguards

Another key player in safe waterfront living is the Hungarian Lifeguard Service (VMSZ), a civilian organisation that carries out key water safety tasks, mainly at Lake Balaton and other major natural water bodies.

Their main tasks are:

  • Lifeguard surveillance of bathing areas and beaches
  • Operation of a motorboat rescue service
  • First aid and lifesaving in case of water accidents
  • Organisation of prevention and information programmes on water safety
  • Organisation of rescue exercises and training

In the event of an emergency, they can also be contacted via the emergency number 1817, in cooperation with the water police. Emergency number: +36 30 383 8383

What everyone should know on the waterfront:

  • Children in boats must wear life jackets - this should be an automatic parental reflex
  • Zero tolerance for drinking and driving on the water is mandatory
  • Don't go in deep water if you can't swim
  • Elderly or sick people should never swim alone
  • If a mattress or ball floats away, don't swim after it - you could easily find yourself in open water and not be sure you'll be able to find your way back
  • Wait at least 1-2 hours after eating or drinking alcohol before swimming
